Nigel Wilson was born in 1957 & grew up in Wellington. He has been a full time artist since leaving the teaching profession at Cargill High School, Invercargill in 1997, where he was associate teacher for 7 years. He has a fine arts degree from Canterbury University where he was tutored under Don Pebbles. Since, he has exhibited regularly, winning a number of painting awards and is well presented in public and private collections and has close to 30 solo exhibitions to his name. In 2000 Nigel and his wife Janice, moved to Central Otago where he continues to boldly paint the Otago landscapes. In an art critic’s description of Nigel’s work, he says the following; “Nigel’s work captures the raw, natural beauty and distinctive character of New Zealand’s southern landscapes through expressive, impassioned brushwork and vibrant descriptive colour. From a distance Nigel’s works provide an imposing scene, but up close they are even more arresting. Oil paint has been applied with variety, energy and certainty, with each stroke having a compelling autonomy.” Some of Nigel’s’ works will be on display in the Game Keeper Restaurant at Alana Estate from March 17th 2012 onwards. Some will be available for purchase.
